Twenty-two skijorers and 31 dogs took advantage of the few hours each year the Beach
Lake trails in Chugiak are open to skijoring at an Anchorage Skijor Club (ASC) hosted
event.
The 9.5K, 2-dog class featured the closest racing of the day with only forty seconds
separating the top five finishers. Rebecca Knight and her dogs Gypsy and Clyde
won the class in 19:15.2, to beat the pack of Becky Voris, Bud Rice, and Kim Wells
by twenty seconds. Less than 2.5 seconds separated Voris, Rice and Wells.
Tom Brewer bested James Singleton in the 9.5K, 1-dog class, by less than a minute
with a time of 32:42.8. In the shorter 5K, 2-dog race, Kim Wells and her dogs
Cody and Lani won in 10:05.3, beating Lulie Williams by less than four seconds.
Michael Malvick, racing with two eleven year old dogs, Corky and Ingrid, finished
third.
The results of the 5K, 1-dog race, were close as well. Kathy Faryniarz and
Spook won by a comfortable 35-second margin with a time of 11:10.4. The next
three finishers, Amy McLean, Faryniarz’s husband Mark Selland, and Chuck Pratt finished
within 11.5 seconds of each other. Roz Worcester beat her father, Mark, for
sixth place, besting him by 36 seconds, which was pretty close considering the elder
Worcester raced an elder dog, eleven year old Jorj.
